Theobjectives of the BIAA are to support, promote, facilitate and publish Britishresearch focused on Turkey and the Black Sea littoral in all academicdisciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences and to maintain acentre of excellence in Ankara focused on the archaeology and related subjectsof Turkey. At thecentre of excellence in Ankara, the Institute wishes to maintainand develop use of its key faunal, botanical, inscription and ceramiccollections along with extensive slide/photographic collections and excavationarchives. The Institute aims toencourage increased use of these resources by British and otherresearchers. As a continuation of archive management workundertaken in 2001/02 and 2002/03, the collections' catalogue programme is tobe maintained and gradually extended. The general aim of the archives andcollections project is to create electronic records of the BIAA archives and researchcollections. On-going work is requiredboth to create a single format for the records and to input all the data. From 2005 a new post, Research Scholar, will be created. The Research Scholar will divide their timebetween participating in the archives and collections project and conducting their own research.
Research Scholarship
Applicationsare invited from candidates who should normally have completed a Mastersdegree, or be about to do so, and who intend to go on to conduct research atdoctoral level.
TheResearch Scholarship will be tenable for 9 months from October 2005. TheResearch Scholar will be based at the Institute in Ankara.
The salarywill be £800 per month. The BIAA willpay the cost of one return flight between the UK and Turkey. Accommodation will be available at the Institute in Ankara, as required, at a rate of £7.50per night.
TheResearch Scholar will be expected to spend two-thirds of their time working onthe archives and collections project and one-third of their time conductingtheir own research.
Work on thearchives and collections project will include care and storage of material,assessment of material and data in-putting. Accordingly, it is expected that applicantswill have some experience of handling archaeological and archive materials, andbe competent in basic use of Access, Excel and Word software.
The subjectof the proposed research should focus on Turkey and/or the Black Sea littoral and may fall within any ofthe academic disciplines of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It should lead to a proposal to conductresearch at doctoral level.
