University of Southampton

The University of Southampton has been awarded athree-year research grant under a European Union project toconduct basic research on supersonic and hypersonictransition to turbulence to enable effective integration ofpropulsion with flight vehicle design in the range Mach 3to Mach 5. The project will involve the numericalsimulation (direct numerical simulation and large eddysimulation) of turbulent spots and other transitionscenarios in compressible boundary layers subject tocomplex shock-wave boundary-layer interactions. The projectwill involve detailed flowfield analysis, the constructionof models (for example based on stability theories), andthe development of simplified models for engineeringanalysis.

The successful applicant will have, or will be about toreceive, a PhD in a relevant computational area, and willhave significant expertise in the numerical simulation ofturbulent or transitional flows, preferably forcompressible flows with shock waves. Note that commercialCFD code experience will not be considered relevant, unlessit involves development and testing of large-eddy ordetached-eddy simulation methods. The successful applicantwill have a track record of high quality research asevidenced by lead-authored papers at conferences andpublications in peer-reviewed journals.

Expertise in the development of parallel (MPI) code andthe use of high performance (massively parallel) computersis highly desirable.
