Postdoc position Ecologist, Universiteit van Amsterdam

Due date: 21 July 2005
Location: Amsterdam, Netherland

TheFaculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam is one of Europe'sforemost institutions for higher education and research in its area ofexpertise. It participates in international science networks andcollaborates with both universities and industry. The faculty hasapproximately 2,000 students and 1,500 employees spread over fourdepartments and ten research institutes. Each institute has its ownresearch programme, a substantial part of which is externally financedby the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), theDutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED)(comprising 17 chairs) concentrates on the interactions between livingorganisms and their physical and chemical environment. As part of IBEDthe interdisciplinary chair of Computational Bio- and PhysicalGeography (CBPG) deals with the computational issues that arise in thiscontext. CBPG presently participates in a large national BSIK project,Virtual Laboratory for e-Science (VL-e). It is in the framework of thisproject that CBPG has a Postdoc position, with a duration of two and ahalf years (full-time).

Postdoc position Ecologist

Full-time
Vacancy number 05-1031
Job profile

Theresearch group CBPG focuses on the design and evaluation of newcomputational methods to relate model results with observations in thefields of biogeography and physical geography. Analytical tools (likenew data-mining techniques and geographical information systems) anddata-intensive observation techniques (like satellite remote sensingand ground-based radar observations) play a central role in this work.Within the VL-e project, and in cooperation with the Institute forInformatics, SARA Computing and Network Services and the RoyalNetherlands Air Force, CBPG aims at developing interactive algorithmsfor data exploration and combined state and parameter estimation indynamic and spatially distributed systems. The current research projectfocuses on bird movements and distribution at different scales in spaceand time.

The successful applicant will have two main tasks:
1. Tocooperate with the scientific programmer to develop and test algorithmsfor automated data exploration using a centralized database and VL-eworkflow methodology. 2. To cooperate with a PhD researcher in applyinginverse modelling and data assimilation techniques to develop a dynamicbird migration model.
The developed methodologies will be implemented on clusters for parallel computing and on the worldwide GRID.

Requirements

Weare looking for candidates who have shown a genuine commitment toscientific research and have a strong background in ecology orornithology. They should be enthusiastic about appliedinterdisciplinary computationally intensive research and should beexperienced in computational techniques for data exploration and/ordynamic modelling. While we naturally expect that the successfulcandidate will be able to develop own research, he or she will berequired to cooperate with other scientists within CBPG and theInstitute for Informatics.

Candidates must have:
• A PhD in Ecology or Ornithology
• Well-developed skills in database management and data exploration
• Experience with dynamic models, geostatistics, GIS and programming
• Proven skills in scientific writing (peer-reviewed scientific publications)
• Proven communication skills and the willingness to cooperate in an interdisciplinary team.
