Singapore Millenium Scholarship

Every year, approximately 35 scholarships will be offered to outstanding graduate research scientists at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels to support their full-time research efforts at a Singapore-based university or research institute. In the 2004 scholarship exercise, nearly 1107 applications were received from around the world, and a total of 37 scholarships were awarded.

The SMF scholarships are highly prestigious awards that do not come with any bond. The scholarships are open to all nationalities, and are awarded to only the most dynamic and promising postgraduate candidates to support them in their journey of discovery and achievement. The SMF expects that its scholars’ proposed research projects will have a high potential of impact on R&D in their respective fields, and that their lifelong careers will be marked by significant contributions to research, teaching and/or industrial applications.

To conduct a fair and equitable selection of the most meritorious young researchers for award of its scholarships, the SMF has established four main criteria for review and evaluation of all applications.

Eligibility
1. Young aspiring researchers of all nationalities who intend to pursue a research career.
2. Applicants should have an excellent academic track record. Prior research experience and publications in peer-reviewed international journals will be advantageous.
3. Successful applicants must not concurrently hold any other scholarships.
4. Applicants must gain acceptance to the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University or any Singapore-based research institutions before they can be considered for the SMF Scholarships.
5. Applicants who are currently enrolled at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University or any Singapore-based research institutions can also apply.

Tenure of Award
The awards are tenable at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University or Research Institutes in Singapore.

Financial Supports
The levels of financial support are listed as follows.
Masters candidate
S$2,000 per month for up to 2 years*
PhD candidate
S$3,000 per month for up to 3 years*
Postdoctoral candidate
S$5,000 per month for up to 2 years*

The Award does not provide for any other costs like enrolment or course fees, settling-in allowances or any other expenses, which are to be borne by the awardees themselves from their monthly grants.

A special travel allowance of up to S$2000 may be provided to assist foreign SMF scholars cover one-way economy air travel to Singapore. Foreign scholars who are already located in Singapore are not eligible for this travel allowance. There will be no additional provision for freight charges, or for travel expenses of family members. All claims must be supported by official receipts.
