Nederland: Postdoc in the Area of Communication Protocols for Mobile, Embedded Devices

Job description
Name: PhD student or Postdoc

Within the EU-funded Relate project (Relative Positioning of MobileObjects in Ad hoc Networks) we have an opening for a researcher in thearea of communication protocols for mobile, embedded devices. Theposition is open for both PhD students (4 years) and postdocs (2.5years); selection will be based on the research qualities/potentials ofthe individual candidates.

The Relate project is an international collaboration between LancasterUniversity (UK), University of Karlsruhe (DE), Delft University ofTechnology (NL), and the University for Health Sciences, MedicalInformatics and Technology, Innsbruck (AT). These partners work on anapproach wherein spontaneously networked mobile objects performcollaborative sensing and communication to collectively determine theirrelative positions and spatial arrangement. The project will engagewith the fundamental research challenges that such an approach implies:how to obtain relative position in ad hoc systems, how to reason aboutdynamic spatial arrangements, and how to provide application supportacross different domains. Our research method is experimental systemsengineering: building and deploying prototype systems for applicationexperiments in the real world.

The research at Deft will focus on the question of how to arrangeefficient communication between embedded, mobile devices. Will it bepossible to take advantage of knowledge about the relative positions ofthe devices in the network? Will solutions scale to larger networks? Will they stabilize under typical movement patterns? What about therate at which nodes joining and leaving the network? In addition toanswering these, and other questions, communication software will bedeveloped for use by the other partners so the validity can bedemonstrated in a working system.
