Japan: Fellowship for Visiting Scholars at The Center for Southeast Asian Studies Kyoto University


The Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University is nowaccepting applications from scholars and researchers who work onSoutheast Asia, or on any one of the countries in that region, and areinterested in spending time in Kyoto, Japan, in order to conductresearch, write, or pursue other scholarly interests in connection withtheir field of study.

Since 1963, more than two hundred distinguished scholars havevisited the Center for periods ranging from six months to one year.They have availed themselves of the Center's considerable scholarlyresources and the invigorating atmosphere of scenic Kyoto, the ancientcapital of Japan and the main repository of the country's culturaltreasures, to pursue their interests in Southeast Asian area studies.The Center's multi-disciplinary character and the diverse researchinterests of its faculty offer visiting scholars an ideal opportunityfor the exchange of ideas and the cultivation of comparativeperspectives.

Five fellowships will be awarded for the first half of 2008 on acompetitive basis. Fellowships are normally for a six-month duration,although in exceptional cases they can be extended for an additionalsix months.

Successful applicants will receive an appropriate stipend to coverinternational travel and living expenses in Kyoto. Research funds willalso be provided to facilitate his/her work. Funds will also beallocated for domestic travel, subject to government regulations, and anumber of other facilities are available to visiting scholars. Fellowswill be expected to reside in Kyoto for the duration of theirfellowship period.

Scholars are normally invited to deliver a public lecture duringtheir term at the Center. Fellows will also be encouraged to submit anarticle for possible publication in the Center's quarterly journal,Southeast Asian Studies, and to contribute to the online Kyoto Reviewof Southeast Asia.

Fellowships
Five fellowships, including one librarian position, will become available on the following dates:1)May 1, 2008
2)May 1, 2008 (Librarian)
3)June 1, 2008
4)July 1, 2008
5)September 1, 2008

Eligibility
Applicants must be mid-career orsenior researchers who will be under 63 years of age at the time of thecommencement of the fellowship appointment. This fellowship is notavailable to individuals currently pursuing graduate degrees orpost-doctoral studies.

Application Procedure
Applicants must submit the following documents in English:
a)a completed application form
b)a curriculum vitae (not exceeding 5 pages) including research experience and a list of your main publications.
c)twoletters of recommendation (these may be enclosed with the applicationor sent by the referees directly to the CSEAS, General Affairs Section)
d)Applications should not be stapled, folded, or bent.
