Germany: PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in Various Fields, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

We invite applications from outstanding individuals for one post-doctoral and four PhD positions to support core interdisciplinary research teams at PIK. We apply computer models to analyse the interactions between climate change, the terrestrial water cycle, agricultural production, trade and land use changes on the global and regional scales. Emerging issues include the role of agriculture for climate change adaptation and mitigation, especially in poor countries, and the increasing demand for bio-energy.

1. Post-doc, applied economics (agricultural, resource, development economics), human geography, or applied mathematics (TV-L 13-O, full-time, ref. hlc/01). We are looking for a person with profound experience in applied economic modelling, esp. mathematical rogramming.
This position involves further development of a global land use/crop model, including macroeconomic linkages, technological change and the valuation of water resources. The model will be applied in combination with macroeconomic and energy system models to assess various climate change adaptation and mitigation options, economic development, and the
future energy mix.

2. PhD student, applied economics (agricultural, resource, development economics), human geography or applied mathematics (TV-L 13-O/2, full-time, ref. hlc/02). We are looking for a person who enjoys quantitative modelling work and preferably has already some experience
in economic modelling. This position involves further development of a global land use/crop model, including the spatial characteristics of land use activities, international trade, and the linkages to the water cycle.

3. PhD student, geo-ecology, agronomy, human geography, hydrology or a related discipline (TV-L 13-O/2, full-time, ref. dig/01). We are looking for a person who enjoys work with large datasets and preferably has experience in computer programming. This position involves further
development of a vegetation/crop model, including representation of crop water requirements. The model will be used for analysing future scenarios under diverse climatic, economic, water and land use change conditions, including extensive sensitivity studies.

4. PhD student, hydrology, climatology, geo-ecology, or a related discipline (TV-L 13-O/2, full-time, ref. dig/02). We are looking for a person who is able to handle large datasets and preferably has programming experience. This position involves assessments of the
terrestrial water cycle of the 20th and 21st century with a focus on land use change effects and droughts, using a vegetation/crop model in an intercomparative mode with other global models. The work will be realised in the framework of the EU-funded WATCH project.

5. PhD student, geo-informatics, geo-ecology, system analysis, hydrology, or a related discipline (TV-L 13-O/2, full-time, ref. vk/01). A candidate for this position should be interested in eco-hydrological modelling and have programming experience. The position involves further
development of a regional-scale eco-hydrological model, and vulnerability assessment. The work will be realised in the framework of the EU-funded NEWATER project.

Excellent data analysis skills, fluency in English, written and oral presentation skills, and the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team are essential requirements for all positions. PIK values diversity and encourages applications from women, disabled people, and minority groups. All positions are for two years initially with the possibility of extension. Position 1 and 4 are subject to final project approval by the funding organisations.

Applications should be written in English or German and arrive at PIK no later than 15 June 2007. They should indicate the reference number of the preferred position and be directed to:

Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
