ESRC/MRC Interdisciplinary Research
ESRC/MRC Interdisciplinary Research
Studentships and Postdoctoral Fellowships
The ESRC and the MRC wish to encourage research on issues which are of interest to both Councils and which require the combined approaches of both the medical and social sciences. The two Councils intend to fund up to 20 interdisciplinary research studentships and up to 10 postdoctoral fellowships through this jointly funded scheme in 2005. The subject matter of each studentship and fellowship must address the interests of both the ESRC and the MRC and must be genuinely interdisciplinary in approach. While applications are invited from any sub-discipline of the social or medical sciences, the following areas have been identified as of particular interest to the two Councils: stem cell research, genomics, obesity, occupational health, the management and delivery of health services, public health issues, deprivation and the developing world and sexual health, preventative intervention, chronic disease management, interaction between the lay and medical community, anti population and health behaviour. Applications are invited for studentships and postdoctoral fellowships to commence in October 2005.

The terms and conditions of these interdisciplinary studentships will be similar to those for ESRC or MRC research studentships, but with an annual stipend £2,000 in excess of standard studentships. Applications will be accepted for 1+3 awards (funding for a year-long RT masters course followed by three years’ doctoral funding) or +3 awards (three years’ doctoral funding). +3 applicants must hold a degree at masters level in either the medical or the social sciences. A prospective student must have two named supervisors, one each from a social science and a medical science background. The department which will administer the studentship must either have ESRC recognition or satisfy MRC’s funding criteria.
Applications for the studentships and postdoctoral fellowships should be submitted by 1 March 2005 to the ESRC, who will be administering the competitions. It is essential that all documentation is returned to the ESRC and not to MRC.
