The Department of Applied Mathematics, RSPhysSE, has a long and highly respected research tradition in the field of surface force measurement and interfacial phenomena. We are a multi-disciplinary group, with interests crossing the traditional domains of physics, chemistry, biology and geology. The Department is active in the Smartprint Cooperative Research Centre and this has opened up several opportunities to extend the experimental surface science expertise into the fundamental studies of printing, liquid imbibition into porous media, most notable paper fibre products, and studies centred around the paper fibre interface. We seek researchers with a broad understanding of surface science and its application.

Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to develop experimental techniques including equipment design and implementation and the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary group. Experience with Atomic Force Microscopy and surface force measurement, fluorescence or confocal microscopy, Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Ellipsometry or Brewster angle microscopy, wetting and adsorption studies is preferred. These techniques are available within the group and can be used alongside small angle X-ray scattering, micro-X-ray Computed Tomography and high speed video microscopy.
