A fully funded (EU level fees and maintenance) ESRC+3 "CASE" scholarship is available from September 2005 to support PhDthesis research concerned with the economic analysis of lotteries.

Thisstudentship is in collaboration with the UK lottery regulatory body,the National Lottery Commission (www.natlotcomm.gov.uk/home/) whichwill provide data and advice and will top-up the ESRC stipend to allowthe researcher to spend some time at their London headquarters. Theprogramme of research for this position is likely to include analysisof panel data of lottery play, cross-state data on aggregate sales andchanges in lottery designs, and theoretical work on regulatory andcontract design issues.

The successful student will be supervisedby Professor Ian Walker(www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/staff/faculty/walker/) inWarwick's Department of Economics(www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/) - one of the top researchdepartments in the UK. The research will be conducted at the frontiersof applied microeconomics and microeconometrics and the studentshipscan be expected to lead to an academic career, or a career inconsulting, government, or even in the industry itself. Thesuccessful student will be required to take the Department of Economicsadvanced PhD coursework (seewww2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/economics/pg/phd_programme/ for details) andthen spend a further two years on supervised research on an agenda tobe worked out with Ian Walker and the NLC. The young researcher wouldbe expected to play a full part in the intellectual life of theDepartment and the wider research community, attending seminars andworkshops, presenting their research findings at conferences,collaborating with other young researchers, attending masterclasses andsummer schools, and engaging in training activities.
