Enteringthe fifth year of their partnership, the Canadian InternationalDevelopment Agency (CIDA) and the Canadian Federation for theHumanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) wish to expand the dialogueamong established academics, policy makers and practitioners byincluding dynamic new scholars currently enrolled in a graduateprogram. The CIDA-CFHSS Graduate Student Competition invites graduatestudents from around the world to submit proposals for research papersthat will be presented at the 2006 Congress of the Humanities andSocial Sciences.
The 75th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences will be held atYork University from May 27 to June 3, 2006, with an expectedattendance of 8,500 delegates from more than 70 scholarly associationsand universities. It is the ideal forum to explore ideas, and presentand debate research findings with scholars, policy makers andstakeholders from all levels of government, the private sector, andnational and international research institutions dedicated to theadvancement and dissemination of humanities and social sciencesresearch.
Weare seeking new perspectives and fresh ideas on a research topic thataddresses issues closely related to international development as wellas the 2006 Congress theme, "The City."
The 2006 Congresstheme is intended to stimulate discussion, debate, and exchange acrossa wide-ranging variety of perspectives and against the background ofdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research andscholarship. It presents opportunities for Congress delegates andassociations⎯individually and/or collaboratively⎯to explore a range ofissues and approaches to understanding "the city."The CIDA-CFHSS 2006 Graduate Student Competition
Requirements:This competition is open to all graduate students in developed anddeveloping countries. For an application to be considered, it mustinclude:
1. Proposal. A research proposal between 500 and1,000 words in length (longer proposals will not be considered) thatidentifies and demonstrates:
- the relevance of your research theme to international development and the Congress theme;
- the particular set of sub-issues that will constitute the paper's focus;
- the key questions, assumptions and hypotheses; and,
- anunderstanding of how the research may advance thinking in relation tothe existing bodies of scientific and scholarly research.
2. Format. Entries must be written in English or French.Title to appear as heading on each page. No name on any page except onthe cover page that must accompany each entry.
3. A current curriculum vitae.
4.Letters of reference. Two letters of reference confirming that theapplicant is actively engaged in the research and/or writing of amaster's thesis or doctoral dissertation in the humanities or socialsciences. The applicant's academic advisor and/or Dean or DepartmentHead should write at least one letter of reference.
Deadline: Submissions will be accepted online only at http://www.fedcan.ca/congress2006until Friday, January 6, 2006. Letters of reference must be mailed andpostmarked no later than January 6 to the following address:

Evaluation: Research proposals will be evaluated on the basis of content, style, organization, and references:
- Content: Originality, appropriateness, and relationship to thefield of international development and the Congress theme; and extentto which the author addresses the topic selected.
- Style:Adherence to the generally accepted rules of style. Please refer toCIDA's Journal of Development Policy and Practice Guidelines or followMLA or APA style sheets.
- Organization: Clear thesis statement, logic of the content, and coherence.
- Useof references: Importance and appropriateness of the references,suitability of the material used, and accuracy of statements.
Selection Process: A panel consisting of CIDA and CFHSSmembers will review and evaluate the submissions, select up to six (6)proposals for presentation at the Congress, and inform successfulapplicants only by January 31, 2006. The award recipients will berequired to finalize and send an electronic copy of their completedconference paper by May 5, 2006, and present the paper at the Congress.Following the presentation, award recipients will be required toprepare a paper for publication in CIDA's Journal of Development Policyand Practice. Final texts will be due by August 31, 2006.
The Award will include:
- Congress registration fees;
- Expenses incurred intraveling to and from Toronto, Ontario, Canada in accordance withTreasury Board of Canada travel directives;
- Two (2) nights' hotel or residence accommodation at the meeting site; plus,
- Astipend in the amount of $2,000, awarded in two equal installments: 1/2following the presentation of the paper at the Congress; 1/2 followingsubmission of the paper to the Journal of Development Policy andPractice on or before August 31, 2006.
