The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) program providessupport for social scientists and humanists conducting dissertation fieldresearch in all areas and regions of the world. Up to fifty fellowships will beawarded in the year 2006. The program is administered by the Social ScienceResearch Council in partnership with the American Council of LearnedSocieties. Funds are provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The IDRF awards enable doctoral candidates of proven achievement andoutstanding potential to use their knowledge of distinctive cultures, societies,languages, economies, polities, and histories, in combination with theirdisciplinary training, to address issues that transcend their disciplines or areaspecializations. The program supports scholarship that treats place andsetting in relation to broader phenomena as well as in particular historical andcultural contexts.
Standard fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve months in thefield, plus travel expenses. Individual awards will be approximately $20,000.In some cases, the candidate may propose fewer than nine months of overseasfieldwork, but no award will be given for fewer than six months.The fellowship must be held for a single continuous period within theeighteen months between July 2006 and December 2007.
