Summer Program in Riken Institute - Japan

The RIKENBrain Science Institute (RIKEN BSI), located just outside Tokyo, Japan,offers a summer program to train advanced students interested in brainfunction. Applicants may choose either a two-month laboratoryinternship (Plan A) within a RIKEN BSI laboratory, or participate in anintensive 11-day lecture course (Plan B) featuring a distinguishedinternational faculty. Those participating in the internship may alsoenroll in the lecture course.

Typically, around 45international students are accepted to the Summer Program each year.Attendees have wide-ranging academic backgrounds and are usuallyenrolled in graduate courses, or have recently embarked on postdoctoralresearch. However, candidates holding other positions are encouraged toapply.

Attendees usually reside on the RIKEN campus, where they have ampleopportunity to interact with invited lecturers, other attendees andRIKEN BSI researchers. Students unable to provide their own financialsupport will be considered for travel and accommodation bursariesprovided by RIKEN BSI.

Application documents should be sent by regular mail and be received by the application deadline.

Deadline: February 28, 2005

Late or revised applications will not be accepted. Applications by e-mail or fax will also not be accepted.

We recommend that you apply early in order to ensure that yourapplication arrives by the deadline. Please read the directionscarefully as failure to follow all of the instructions may eliminateyour application early in the selection process. Notification ofacceptance will be sent by e-mail 4 - 6 weeks after the applicationdeadline.

The following application documents should be printed on letter-size orA4 -size paper and sent in one package (documents sent in more than onepackage will not be accepted).

1. Application Form
Download and complete the appropriate form (Plan A: Internship) or(Plan B: Lecture Course). Applicants who wish to apply for bothcategories must send separate application packages. (Students acceptedfor Plan A are automatically eligible to enroll in Plan B.)

2. Curriculum Vitae (must include the categories below)
a. Education (provide the institution name and highest degree obtained including years starting with most recent degree.)
b. Research experience
c. Publications

3. Reason why you wish to attend the Summer Program
Pleasewrite a brief statement of approximately 500 words summarizing yourresearch background (if any to date, including specific fields,experimental work, laboratories, etc.) and how you plan to incorporatewhat you learn into your current and future research work.

4. Two letters of recommendation
These are to be sent together with your application in separately sealed envelopes.

5. A letter requesting financial support
Financial support for travel and accommodation will be considered forthose without external funding. Any candidate requesting financialassistance MUST request it when submitting their application. Attach aseparate letter signed by both yourself and your laboratory headstating why you require the support. Please note that any salarysupplement or support for food expenses (approximately five to tendollars per day) will not be offered.

5. (Plan A only)- Internship project description
Descriptionsshould be as specific as possible and state whether you are familiarwith the experimental techniques you plan to use. Successfulapplications will be expected to have clearly defined goals that can beachieved within the internship period.
