The International Summer School (ISS). Six Weeks of Academic Achievement and International Goodwill

The International Summer School (ISS) is an academic center for learning in an international context, and a forum for fostering intercultural understanding. Every summer from late June to early August it welcomes some 500 students from all over the world to its wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, mostly within the liberal arts and social sciences.

General Scholarship Information

Scholarship Donors to the International Summer School:
Norwegian Foreign Ministry, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), Norwegian Research Council, The Freedom of Expression Foundation (Fritt Ord) – Oslo, Norwegian People’s Aid, Norwegian Church Aid, Norwegian Refugee Council, Norwegian Peace Corps, Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, Diakonhjemmet University College, Norwegian Rotary Council, Rotary International, Georgia Rotary, North Bethesda Rotary, Sons of Norway Foundation; District and local lodges, King Olav V Fund, Hans and Else Ege, the Bay and Paul Foundations, Nansen Fund, Brittingham Vikings, Bessie Haugen Johnson Scholarship, International Summer School.

Scholarship Value:
The scholarships vary in value according to the documented need and resources of the individual applicant and the regulations pertaining to the scholarship fund in question. Apart from pocket money, which may be granted to applicants from countries with fixed currency restrictions, the value of the scholarship is applied directly to the ISS fees and is not payable in cash.

Scholarship Selection:
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic and personal qualifications and financial need. Be aware that the number of scholarship applications regularly greatly exceeds the grants available, and the competition for scholarships is consequently very tough.

Demands for Scholarship Recipients:
Scholarship recipients are obliged to take a full program of courses and to sit final examinations and/or write term papers.

No Scholarships Ordinarily Granted by the ISS For:

  • applicants to Norwegian language courses level I and II
  • applicants from developing countries applying for undergraduate courses
  • applicants residing in Norway or other Western European countries
  • medical professionals applying to language courses
  • applicants with citizenship from the following countries:
    Australia, Bermuda, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Japan, Kuwait, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Panama, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
