National Library of Medicine Fellowships (apply)

The objectives and goals of the Biomedical and Health Informatics Research Training Program (BHIRT) at the University of Missouri are to provide:

  • Mentored research training in informatics in academic research
  • A foundation of instruction in core competencies of the body of informatics knowledge
  • Exposure to the breadth of areas of investigation that compose informatics.

Participation in collaborative informatics research programs under senior researchers is the primary training activity of the BHIRT Program. This includes publications and presentations at national meetings. The three broad focal areas of informatics research include:

  • Bioinformatics and computational biology
  • Health information systems, services and policy
  • Health informatics for populations and individuals

Other training activities may be summarized as consisting of formal degree programs, additional BHIRT core courses and requirements, research seminars and journal clubs and experiential training in the practice of informatics.

There are fourteen fellow positions in the BHIRT program: six predoctoral fellows, seven postdoctoral fellows and one librarian fellow. The predoctoral students pursue Ph.D. degrees in various academic disciplines depending on their background and interests. These programs historically have included computer science, computer engineering, information science, nursing, biochemistry, statistics, and pathobiology. Depending on their background, postdoctoral fellows can pursue a master of science degree in Health Informatics, in addition to their research focus. We additionally have short-term fellowships for individuals who wish a focused research experience. These individuals will have a specific project with a specific faculty mentor for a three to six month period with the expectation of a publication from the project.
