CFJ Offers Diploma in Online Journalism

MANILA, Jan. 22 - The Konrad Adenauer Center for Journalism at the Ateneode ManilaUniversity (CFJ) is now accepting applications for the Diploma in OnlineJournalismwhich begins March 3.

The diploma program, the newest in CFJ^s curriculum, is directed at Asianjournalistswho seek to acquire new skills and a deeper understanding of events,journalismprinciples and processes in the Information Society. It is comprised ofthree interactiveonline courses that will run in successive six-week periods from March toOctober:Computer-Assisted Reporting, March 3 to April 16; Reporting aboutInformationTechnology, May 12 to June 27; and Online Journalism, September 12 toOctober 24.

Only 15 students will be admitted to the program. Working journalists willbe givenpriority and may apply for fellowships covering tuition and miscellaneousexpenses.Admission to a single course is possible depending on the available slots.Applicationsfor admission to the diploma program and the first course, Computer-AssistedReporting,will be accepted until February 24.

Dr. Randolph Lee Reddick, chair of the journalism department of the Schoolof MassCommunications, Texas Tech University, will conduct the courseComputer-AssistedReporting from Lubbock, Texas. The course covers online research, databases,mappingsoftware, word and spreadsheet programs and basic design. The secondmodule,Reporting About Information Technology, tackles competencies needed to writeaboutsoftware and hardware news, IT industries, technology trends and issues.OnlineJournalism will cap the program with discussions on the Internet’s impact onjournalism,legal and ethical issues, and the Web as a news medium.

Successful applicants for admission and fellowship grants will be announcedbyFebruary 28, and for the single course, by March 1.

CFJ, a joint project of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the Ateneo,was foundedin June 2000. It seeks to promote good journalism in Asia by providingtraining programsmainly to journalists. Journalism teachers and trainers and other mediaprofessionalsare also considered. CFJ programs include diploma courses, certificatecourses and theMaster of Arts in Journalism.
